Principal's Report
As Term 3 draws to a close, we reflect with pride on a term filled with learning, growth and connection across both campuses. Our students and staff have embraced every opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom and it has been inspiring to see their courage and enthusiasm shine.
This term has been full of camps that challenged and inspired our students. As part of Horizons our Year 9 students ventured to Maydena and Maria Island, where they built resilience, strengthened friendships and deepened their appreciation for Tasmania’s unique natural environment. These experiences gave our students the chance to connect with each other, push themselves and create lasting memories.
Our Year 10 Outdoor Education students also had the opportunity to explore Maria Island. We are also excited to share that a group of our students are currently in Japan, enjoying an incredible cultural and learning experience.
Our commitment to community partnerships has continued strongly this term. Students engaged in hands-on learning at the Marine Discovery Centre, explored intergenerational learning through the Council of the Ageing and benefitted from the guidance of mentors through the RAISE mentoring program. These opportunities help our students connect their classroom learning to the world around them, while developing confidence and empathy.
We are thrilled to congratulate our Tournament of Minds teams, who achieved outstanding success at the State Final. Hobart City High School won three disciplines and received Honours in STEM, a fantastic recognition of the creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving of our students and their teachers. We extend our best wishes to our three winning teams as they represent Hobart City High School at the Tournament of Minds International Final in Sydney
In sport, our students proudly represented the school in the Tassie Hawks Cup and across a range of netball competitions, demonstrating both skill and teamwork. Our chess players also excelled winning the Term 3 Inter High Chess competition, showcasing patience, focus and strategy.
Two students attended the We Are More Conference in Alice Springs, adding their voices to important conversations about student leadership and agency, seamless pathways and governance closer to learning. Their contributions reflect the thoughtful and engaged young people who make up our school community.
House activities this term have been filled with energy and colour. It has been wonderful to see students and staff embracing House culture to build connection, belonging and school pride.
We are excited to announce that planning is underway for two incredible international trips in 2026. One to France and one to Vietnam. These trips will provide our students with unforgettable opportunities to expand their horizons, immerse themselves in new cultures and develop a deeper global perspective.
An information session for parents and carers will be held early in Term 4. Attending this session is not a commitment to participate in the trip, but it is an important chance to learn more about the itinerary, costs, safety and the life-changing experiences on offer for our students.
We encourage all families who may be interested to join the online sessions and hear more about these amazing opportunities. Please scan the QR code to express your interest for the information sessions for 2026 International trips.

As we move into Term 4, we look forward to continuing our focus on academic, social and emotional learning, while also celebrating the achievements and milestones of our students.
Thank you to our students, staff and families for your ongoing support of Hobart City High School. Term 3 has been a rich and rewarding one and we wish everyone a safe and restful break.
Britany, Holly and Andrew

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki Visits HCHS
Hobart City High School had the privilege of welcoming Dr, Karl Kruszelnicki to our school. His passion for science, curiosity and discovery left our students inspired and excited about the endless possibilities ahead. A huge thank you to Dr Karl for sharing his knowledge and energy with us, it was truly unforgettable!

Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp - Maria Island
Students from the 10-1 Outdoor Education class had the opportunity to explore Maria Island. After a windy ferry ride, students kitted up and trekked to French’s Farm for night one.
We saw countless wombats along the way, as well as stunning views.
Day Two started with a stretch of the legs to Point Lesueur Convict Cells before packing up camp and heading back to Darlington for night two. Students did amazingly well applying the skills they have learnt in class. Big smiles all around.

International Students Excursion To Port Arthur
Our international students went on an excursion to Port Arthur Historic Site. We learned about convict history and visited the Isle of the Dead in a beautiful part of Tasmania.

Year 8 Science Week - Sustainability Centre
As part of Science Week, a group of Year 8 students were invited to Sustainability Learning Centre. They investigated and engaged in the bushland around Hobart College, visited different types of greenhouses and learned how sunlight, water, and soil work together to produce food for plants. Students even potted their own succulent and brought them back to school.

RYDA Road Safety Program
Year 10's had a great day participating in the RYDA road safety program learning about distractions, peripheral vision, and other road risks. Thanks to Rotary and Claremont College for hosting such a great day for our students.

Mount Hotham Ski Trip
The Mt Hotham Ski Trip is an incredible experience that Hobart City High School offer. The Ski Trip is a five-day camp in the snowy Victorian Alps. It is a chance to experience something new, or to improve on your abilities. All students have a choice of either skiing or snowboarding and are supported by lessons run by experienced ski or snowboarding instructors. It’s also an amazing opportunity to make some new friends or to have a fun holiday with friends. We stayed in a hotel called the Alberg that is just walking distance from the slopes, with dinners and breakfasts included. Overall, the Ski Trip was an extremely fun and exciting camp!

Year 9 Horizons Excursion
Year 9 Horizons students had a spectacular time in the Southwest. Students walked along the 140m Gordon Dam wall. One side is the Gordon River, the other the lake, held back by an eggshell design wall. It was huge and impressive!

Melbourne Band Tour
Concert Band, conducted by Mr Alex Brown, performed on stage at the Victorian School's Music Festival! Months of hard work paid off and our band sounded amazing! The adjudicators awarded an outstanding for presentation and an excellent for rhythmic accuracy. Overall, our band was awarded silver in the Junior Concert Band category. Congratulations!

Year 5 Taster Day At HCHS
Last week we welcomed 270 Year 5 students from our local primary schools for our annual Taster Day. Students had the opportunity to experience a range of high school subjects including Science, Art, HPE, and Creative Writing, while meeting some of the teachers who may guide their learning in the future.
Our student leaders, Tim and Lucy, opened the day with a warm welcome. Our peer leaders then helped guide student learning throughout the day. The Year 5s impressed us with their enthusiasm, willingness to try new things, and excellent behaviour.
The day was a wonderful introduction to life at HCHS, and we look forward to welcoming these students back in the coming years as they begin their high school journey.

Tournament Of Minds
Over the past six weeks, our four incredible Tournament of Minds teams have been working tirelessly, using creativity, collaboration and critical thinking to prepare their solutions. We are so proud of their effort, teamwork and problem-solving along the way.

Science Week At Government House
Two of our outstanding Hobart City High School students had the privilege of attending a Science Week celebration at Government House. They joined young people from across Southern Tasmania to celebrate the importance of science, innovation and discovery in shaping our future. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with others who share a passion for STEM and to be inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead.

Big Picture News
Big Picture student Sophie is working with Learning Pathways to improve real world experiences for Tasmanian school students.

Earlier this year I met Lauren Job, an Assistant Director Vocational Learning, Learning Pathways at Hobart City High School’s Thinking Forward Forum. Lauren asked if she could interview me and, since last term, I have been working with Lauren, learning more about her role and then meeting her team to become a student representative on a steering committee. The steering committee is all about school based workplace learning (work experience) and being able to have that access in every school in Tasmania. I have been looking over their work and their data to see if they are going in the right direction and if I have any ideas to add to what they can do. I've been to two steering committee meeting so far, the next one is Wednesday 26th of November. In that meeting I have been allocated 5-10 minutes to talk about my workplace learning experiences and how much it has helped me with my education, including what I want to do when I leave school.
