Message from the Principals
It’s hard to believe that we are almost half way through the year!
It has been such a busy year and we would like to take this opportunity to inform you of a few key projects that have been taking place behind the day to day running of the school.
Gifted and Highly Able Strategy
We have been working on creating a gifted and highly able strategy for Hobart City High School (HCHS) students in conjunction with Elizabeth College and our feeder primary schools.
Based on research, our strategy will address 5 key criteria:
1. Gifted and highly able learners need daily challenge in their specific area of talent
2. Opportunites should be provided regularly to work independently in their area of passion and talent
3. Year level and/or Curriculum Area acceleration should be available
4. Provide opportunities to socialise and learn with like ability peers
5. Differentiation in delivery, instruction, pace and amount of review and practice must exist
We look forward to sharing more of this work with you in the near future, but please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to provide input or seek further information about this work.
Middle and 9-12 HCHS Philosophies
From next year, HCHS will be the only state school in Tasmania with a standalone specialist Middle School (Year 7/8). This is an exciting feature for our community. We are working in partnership with experts in the field to ensure that we will be delivering best practice experiences for our students and families to support this critical stage of a student’s development. A very keen group of staff have been seeking student voice, examining the research, and developing a HCHS Middle School Philosophy that will underpin teaching and learning. We will share and consult with our parent body via the School Association to ensure that this philosophy will meet the needs of all our school community moving forward. Our parent voice will be a critical piece of this work.
Similarly, an equally dedicated group of staff have been working on developing our Year 9-12 Senior School Philosophy to ensure that we are offering the right courses to support our young people for their career choices and a successful life after school. This too will be shared with our parent body with genuine opportunities for input.
The establishment of these two philosophies are critical in ensuring that we have the right foundations in order to make the right decisions moving into the future.
Hobart City Partner Schools (Hobart City High School and Elizabeth College)
We are very excited to announce that Shane Fuller (currently New Town Campus Principal) will be taking up the position of Principal at Elizabeth College. This provides wonderful opportunities for our combined staff to work more closely together to support our young people.
We have currently been working with Elizabeth College to look at how we can improve our TCE attainment rate through improving our transition processes, building and growing the aspiration of our young people and ensuring that every student experiences a quality educational experience from every teacher, everyday.
A recruitment process is underway for the New Town Campus Principal and we will announce the successful applicant as soon as this process has been finalised.
Our school community would like to take this opportunity to thank Shane for his enormous contributions to the positive commencement of Hobart City High School. We would also like to acknowledge that his depth of commitment to ensuring that EVERY student is able to achieve their best will serve our Hobart City Partner Schools in good stead as we move to continue to align our work.

Meeting 14 June
At the School Association meeting on 14 June we had a great conversation about how we can better communicate with families. As a new School Association we are focused on how we can build a dynamic school community. We’ve drafted an engagement strategy and in Terms 3 and 4 we'll be reaching out to families to hear your views and suggestions.

We'd like to pass on our gratitude to Shane Fuller for his energy and leadership in the Hobart City Partner Schools and as New Town Campus Principal. We’re sorry to see him go but happy that he’s still in our partner schools family. We wish him success in his new role as Principal of Elizabeth College.
Come along to our meetings
Our meetings are an opportunity for members of our school community to come along and ask questions of our principals, and to suggest ideas for how we can be better. Everyone is welcome.
Our next meeting includes a workshop to develop our Association strategic plan. It’s on Tuesday 9 August, 5.30-8.30pm in the Ogilvie Campus boardroom.
Other meeting dates for 2022 are: 13 September, 8 November, 13 December (5.30-7.00pm) at the Ogilvie Campus.

Reporting of Student Progress – Mid Year Reports
In accordance with the Department of Education policy, we are adopting a 9 point scale for all Australian Curriculum subjects. The scale will indicate student progress in relation to the expected standard for their year level. For non-Australian Curriculum subjects and Year 7 taster courses, students will receive a progress rating against a 5 point scale. Students being assessed against a learning plan or in flexible provision will also receive a slightly adjusted report. Students in Big Picture, again, will also receive an adjusted report.

Our teachers will be available from 3:10 to 5:30 pm on Wednesday 29 June and Tuesday 5 July for face-to-face conversations. If your student attends classes on both campuses, please allow travel time so that you can see all teachers.
Alternatively, an opportunity for a phone conversation can occur on Monday 27 June, Tuesday 28 June, Thursday 30 June or Monday 4 July, Wednesday 6 July and Thursday 7 July between 3:10 and 4:10 pm.

Communication with school is always welcomed and encouraged and our aim is to have several quality discussions of learning with you and your child throughout the year. We highly value working in partnership with our families in order to improve learning outcomes for our students.

An Update on Face Masks
Public Health has advised that from Monday 27 June 2022, face masks are no longer mandatory in schools and Child and Family Learning Centres. This is because of reduced COVID-19 cases in our community.
It’s important to continue to:
- stay at home if unwell, and get tested
- practise COVID-safe behaviours such as frequent handwashing and sanitising
- be up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.
Students, staff and visitors are supported to continue to wear face masks if they choose to. Face masks are still available at our School office if you need them.
When face masks are required
If you’re a close contact, you are still required to wear a face mask indoors as per current Public Health advice.
From time-to-time our school might identify activities or situations where masks are required to be worn. We ask for your support when this happens and know that it is in the best interests of our students, staff and our school.
Our staff will continue to wear masks when working closely with students who are vulnerable to COVID-19.

Whole School Assemblies are Back
Encouragingly, the number of COVID-19 cases in our community are declining. This means that we can now start gradually reintroducing activities – such as whole school assemblies indoors – in a COVID-safe way.
Please know that sometimes circumstances may change quickly. We will let families know of any changes, and we appreciate your flexibility if activities are cancelled or modified at short notice.
An important reminder, especially as we move closer to cold and flu season, to please continue to stay at home if unwell.

Year 8 and 9 Transition Activities
On Thursday June 16 some of our students in Years 8 and 9 participated in transition activities at New Town Campus. After a welcome by Lead Principal, Deb Day, students from both campuses worked together to complete a treasure hunt around the school.
The same event was held this week for another set of Year 8 and 9 classes with the last of the classes having their transition activity next week.
We are looking forward to having more transition activities next term.

Pathways and Careers at Hobart City High School
At Hobart City High School, we are supporting all our students to pursue their career and life aspirations by exposing them to a broad range of careers across many different industries. This term has been a busy one for the Pathways and Careers Centre (PACC) with many opportunities undertaken by students to help them explore the world of work. Along with Year 10’s being involved in transition conversations with Dave Newcombe from Elizabeth College about their next steps post Year 10, students have also been busy exploring careers across a number of industries and building their career management skills through industry connections, work ready workshops and real-world experience. We look forward to continuing to support more students throughout the year to be involved in other opportunities that arise. Read on to find out more about the specific events and programs that have occurred throughout this term.
Year 10 Program - Transition with Dave Newcombe from Elizabeth College
Students in Year 10 at Hobart City High School have commenced transition activities to support them to be confident and make informed decisions about their future. During Term 1 and 2, students have had the opportunity during Link In to learn about their options after Year 10 with Dave Newcombe who is the Elizabeth College – Careers/High School and Transition Advisor. Dave has facilitated an information session to all students about transitioning from Year 10 to 11. He has also been speaking in small groups to students about all the supports available to them to set them up for success for life after school.

- Wellbeing, resilience and knowing that it is ok to be feeling a range of emotions during this time – it is completely normal!
Dave, along with key staff at Hobart City High School will be working with Year 10’s throughout the year at both Ogilvie Campus and New Town Campus during Link In and some core classes to provide all our students and parents with the information they need to transition successfully from secondary school to further education, training and/or work.

Year 10 Program - Master Builders Presentation (Pathways into Building and Construction)
Have you ever wondered what a career in the building and construction industry has to offer? Students at Hobart City High School were lucky enough to find out when they engaged in a presentation and Q & A with Andrew and ex Ogilvie Alumni Brooke who are employed at Fairbrother. They outlined their career paths and experience and shared their insights into the industry. Both Andrew and Brooke provided first-hand tips and tricks about how to “nail” resumes, job applications and interviews. In addition to this, they talked about life as a tradie, employment prospects, work experience, wages and how to put your best foot forward to land an apprenticeship in the industry.
A huge thanks to Andrew and Brooke at Fairbrother and to Master Builders Tasmania for providing this opportunity to Hobart City High School.
Year 9 Polish Program - Beacon Foundation
Did someone say Polish? Hobart City High School Year 9 students were offered an opportunity to participate in a Polish Program delivered by the Beacon Foundation. Polish is a powerful and practical program that helps students feel more confident about their transition into the world of work.
The program also gives students an awareness of global trends in the job market and the value of transferable skills for employment. Students were actively involved throughout the day and had the opportunity to meet a number of business mentors to ask questions and engage in conversations about the world of work. The mentors shared valuable insights about education and employment across a broad range of industries and diverse backgrounds.
Students crafted and delivered an “Elevator Pitch” to mentors in the afternoon session and were awarded certificates for participation in the program.
A huge shout out to the Beacon Foundation, Jake and Sam our facilitators and all of our mentors for the opportunity to take part in this program. We had a blast!
Year 9/10 Program – Agriculture and Farming Growth Industry Preparation Program (GrIPP)
Hobart City High School Year 9/10 students spent a day “agri-careering” around the countryside in the Derwent Valley. Students across both campuses were treated to some of Tasmania’s most spectacular scenery and rural surroundings whilst exploring the diversity of careers the agriculture and farming industry has to offer. Students visited three fantastic farms and properties in the Derwent Valley.
The first stop was Hansen’s Cherry Orchard, a 4th generation family owned vertically integrated business growing, packing and marketing cherries and apples. Wayne Trengrove (our tour guide), took us on a brief walk around the property and shared his knowledge of the industry. Students gained insights about the jobs available, seasonal work, wages and the work ethic needed to thrive in this industry.
Our next stop was Glenelg Estate, a property that has been in the Downie family for nearly 200 years, now successfully run by Charles Downie. Today, founded in a rich history, Glenelg is a thriving producer of superfine Australian Merino wool and maintain the highest standards for the industry. This was the highlight for many students as they were greeted by the enthusiastic working dogs and observed a sheering demonstration and took part in some wool grading.
The third and final stop was Rathmore, situated in the magnificent Tasmanian Central Highlands, and nestled beside the stunning Derwent Valley. Rathmore is a historic sheep property that was settled in 1828, offering accommodation options and country living at its finest. Students were welcomed by Cally and Richard Lyons with a light lunch consisting of home-style cooking with biscuits and freshly baked bread, while undertaking a “speed careering lunch” with each of the business leaders that were introduced throughout the day. Students also got to meet Alice Conder Lang and her sheepdog and another local farmer Richard Hallett at Rathmore.
With the HUGE day drawing to a close, a celebration occurred with a final thank you and close. Once again, we want to extend a huge thanks to all of our business and industry hosts for welcoming us on the day and exposing us to so many authentic real-world opportunities. Lastly, a huge thanks to the Beacon Foundation for providing Hobart City High School with this opportunity.

Music
Our music program continues to grow. Recently, music students have been rehearsing for solo instrument assessment. We have a broad range of music ensembles for student participation to extend the depth of student skills, knowledge and learning in The Arts.

Recently, Ms Fletcher organised a lunch time concert at the Ogilvie High campus. The Grade 10 Rock Band performed to a large and appreciative lunch time audience.

Performing Arts
Pippin
It was our first big excursion across campuses taking 150 students from Music, Band, Vocal Group’s Theatre Production and Drama to experience the Elizabeth College Musical Production of Pippin. We were exposed to a delightful re-imagined version of the original play, set in a high school. The audience was not disappointed: fantastic individual performances, tight chorography, harmonious music and wonderful support from an engaged ensemble. Students came away feeling the COVID-fog for performing has lifted. It was wonderful to witness our alumni: performers, musicians and technical theatre students excel and further their skills and love of the Performing Arts.
Theatre Production
Students and the Production Team have begun writing and producing our own musical – The Pitch. It is a satirical peek inside the theatre industry. The audience can expect all the usual musical trimmings on stage: crazy producers, passionate theatre owners, dancing, British pop stars, Disney haters, families reuniting and dinosaurs! There will be a pre-view of the musical at the Arts Celebration Evening early in Term 4, TBA. The 2022 Theatre Production season is scheduled to be in the first week of December in Hudsbeth Hall, New Town Campus. Stay tuned more information- coming next Term.
Dance – Senior and Grade 8 Ogilvie Campus
From Disco to 80’s Hip Hop and a whole swag more, students have been busily ‘rocking out’ across the decades. Creating, practicing and working on their own compositions of what dancing across the decades means for them. Pieces will be presented for in school audiences for assessments at the end of the Semester.
Drama - Across Campus
Senior Drama have experienced and presented a huge amount of work in the Semester. From Melodrama to Greek History and Chorus Work, excursion to Pippin and rounding out their time with a good old Who Dunnit – audience participation murder mystery. Next Term promises to be jammed packed with an excursion to Elizabeth College to see Bell Shakespeare and continuing with our own take on a Shakespearian classic. Then, wrapping 2022 up with monologue and duologue works in preparation for further dramatic studies.
Grade 8 Drama – Ogilvie Campus
The two classes of Grade 8’s have been busily putting finishing touches on their own take of reality television – in a Satire and Parody Unit. We have the Telly Tubbies - party crazy, Hoot the Owl ends up in hot water over a missing Jimmy Giggle, Married at First sight disasters, Dance Mums take over and a local case with Judge Judy. Performances will be in-school to invited audiences, at the end of the Semester.
Grade 8 Drama – New Town Campus
There has been much fun and merriment as Grade 8 classes have been introduced to the basics of Drama with a 10 week taster course with Justan Wagner from Elizabeth College.
7 Performance – Ogilvie Campus
Grade 7 have had a full taste of performing arts this Semester with team building, skills based games, mime, acting skills, fun with props and costume and most importantly how to work in teams with compassion and gratitude.

Hobart Big Picture Internships
A key part of the Big Picture learning design is connecting students with adult experts who share the same passion. Students then learn from their adult mentor out in the real world. Students and teacher advisors have been working hard to establish internships over the first two terms of this year and it has been outstanding to see so many students learning outside the classroom. Here are some of the internships Big Picture students have been pursuing this so far this year.

Big Picture Tasmanian Youth Forum
On June 3rd, eight students from Hobart Big Picture attended the YNOT Youth 'I AM ME' Forum in Launceston. It involved a discussion about diversity, equity, and inclusion for young people aged 12 to 25. As a group, we discussed topics such as to personal identity, community, and labour and employment and made decisions "keep, change, or create". We selected some speakers from our group to present to an audience of around fifty people. We all had a great time and are looking forward to other events like this! Some highlights during our trip were the Campbell Town Lolly Shop, road trip karaoke and Aleira’s balloon popping which scared everyone in the car.

If you have an unused Playstation or Xbox that you could donate to us, we'd love to have it. Students who are rewarded for being respectful could choose to spend some time playing on it with their friends. There are many exciting competitions on offer this term. English and Humanities teachers and our wonderful Library Technicians will promote and support any interested students. Your support from home is also welcomed and encouraged particularly as students are responsible for submitting their own entries online except for the NAIDOC WEEK Competition which our Library staff will coordinate and the Dorothy McKellar Poetry Awards which English teachers will submit.
To date many HCHS students have participated in the:

- What Matters? national writing competition
- Rostrum Voice of Youth national public speaking competition with Daniel Ocoleanu in Year 7 achieving an outstanding second place.

Special Report - Celebrating NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities. NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.

Diversity
On Wednesday, 1 June, members of the Diversity Groups from both campuses met at the Ogilvie Campus to celebrate the beginning of Pride Month. This was facilitated by the school nurses, Maggie and Lydia.
Students shared food and ideas, watched a short film and created affirmative posters. They will plan a larger event later in the year.
HCHS is an inclusive school which supports students of all backgrounds, genders and orientation which is in line with Department of Education policy. Diversity groups provide a safe place for students to be themselves, find out accurate information, hear about support networks and promote acceptance in the wider school community.

Year 7 HASS Excursion to Parliament House
Over the last few weeks of this term, each of our Year 7 classes will enjoy an excursion to Parliament House followed by an ice-cream stop at Mures. This excursion aims to bring to life our learning this term which, in HASS, has been focussed on the ideas, values and principles that underpin the institutions and processes in Australia’s political and legal systems. Developing students’ civics and citizenship knowledge, understanding and skills has centred around two key questions:
- How is Australia’s system of democratic government shaped by the Constitution?
- What principles of justice help to protect the individual’s rights to justice in Australia’s system of law?
The experience at Parliament House has been hands on and interactive with students enjoying role playing the role of the Speaker and the Clerk. Each class then formed groups representing the government, the Speaker, the Clerk, the opposition, and the crossbenchers who were asked to vote on a proposed bill stating that sugary items should be subjected to a higher tax. Much to the dismay of the adults in the group, the nays far outweighed the ayes and the proposed bill was never passed.
On behalf of the Year 7 students, a big thank you to Mrs Angus for initiating and organising this excursion. Thank you also to our wonderful Teacher Assistants, Teachers and Senior Staff who accompanied each group.
