Principal News
Welcome back to Term 3! We hope all our students, staff and families had a restful and enjoyable break.
We’ve started the term on a high, with some fantastic achievements already. A group of students returned from their World Challenge expedition to Borneo, where they demonstrated incredible resilience, teamwork, courage and leadership in what was truly a life-changing experience. We’re proud of the way they represented Hobart City High School.
Term 3 is always a busy one and we’re looking forward to many exciting events ahead. In the coming weeks we look forward to our Swimming Carnival which is a chance for students to show their house spirit and enjoy a fun day of competition. We’re also preparing for Book Week, where we’ll celebrate the power of reading and storytelling across both campuses.
We’re thrilled to congratulate Sassy, who has been selected as one of only two Tasmanians to be named a finalist in the Young Archies which is a remarkable achievement. Her portrait is currently on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, alongside works from some of the most talented young artists across the country. Well done, Sassy.
Congratulations to our Year 9 Debating Team, taking out the Year 9 Debating Championships. This is an outstanding effort that showcases their confidence, critical thinking and collaboration.
Congratulations to Alara, who received a Highly Commended in the Year 7 & 8 category and to Chloe, who was Runner-up in the Year 9 & 10 category of the What Matters? writing competition. An outstanding achievement by both students.
Thank you to all the families who joined us for our recent Discussions of Learning. These conversations are so valuable in building strong partnerships between school and home and supporting each student’s growth.
Preparations are underway for our four Tournament of Minds teams. We can’t wait to see their creative thinking and problem-solving skills in action as they prepare for the regional finals later this term.
We wish our students heading to the snow a fantastic time and look forward to hearing all about it on their return.
It’s shaping up to be another great term of learning and connection at Hobart City High School.
Borneo World Challenge Tour
During the holidays 12 inspiring young people headed off on a life-changing World Challenge expedition to Borneo! Their first stop? The heart of the jungle, where they worked alongside KOPEL, a local community organisation dedicated to conservation and sustainable development. From reforestation efforts to learning about the incredible biodiversity of the region, this team dived straight into hands-on work that makes a real impact. They cleared jungle, planted trees, collected seedlings and completed community work.

The next stop was all about immersing in culture, as the group spent the day in a Dusun village taking part in a traditional cooking class. With guidance from warm and welcoming hosts, they learned to prepare age-old recipes passed down through generations. It wasn’t just about food it was a window into the Dusun way of life. A truly enriching and delicious experience.

Construction Career Expo
A group of interested students had the fantastic opportunity to attend the Tasmanian Building and Construction Career Expo, gaining valuable insights into one of Australia’s most dynamic industries. From hands-on trade demonstrations to exploring cutting-edge technologies and speaking with industry professionals, our students were fully immersed in the world of construction. It was a great chance for students to explore potential career pathways, ask questions, network, and see firsthand how classroom learning connects to real-world opportunities. A huge thank you to the organisers and all the passionate tradesman, apprentices, and exhibitors who took the time to educate and inspire our students.

Chess Tournament
Hobart City High won the second Inter-school Chess Tournament for the year, with Friends coming second and Hobart College third Congratulations to our team.

Digital Mentorship Program
Fifteen Big Picture students are participating in a digital mentorship program where we help to teach the elderly people of Rosary Gardens Residential Care Home about various aspects of technology and how to use their devices. We meet every Thursday during Term 3.
I am having a good time with the program so far, as another student Atticus and I have paired up with a resident named Roger who is interested in learning how to use his technology. Atticus and I have assisted in helping him search for something, teaching him how to fix his keyboard settings when they made the letters too small, and showing him how to connect to the local WIFI at Rosary Gardens. It gives me a really good feeling of helping people in the community and helping people who don’t know as much as we do. I’m looking forward to continuing the program and helping to teach Roger more and being able to answer his questions about technology.
