Principal Report

As we reach the end of Term 2, we want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a term full of focused learning, adventure and growth here at Hobart City High School. We are incredibly proud of the achievements of our students, staff and broader school community.

Our classrooms have been alive with curiosity and hard work it has been wonderful to see our students engaging deeply with their learning across all year levels. We are particularly proud of the way our students continue to challenge themselves and support each other in achieving their best.

One of the highlights of this term was our highly successful Horizons digital photography Camp to Cradle Mountain, where our students had the chance to develop their skills in an incredible natural setting. It was fantastic to see their creativity flourish, capturing stunning images of our unique Tasmanian landscape. We also had two groups of students bravely take on the Overland Track, pushing themselves both physically and mentally. They should be commended for their determination and teamwork.

It’s also been wonderful to see so many of our students getting involved in sport this term, representing our school with pride and great sportsmanship. A special congratulations to our Senior boys’ volleyball team, who took out the win in the Southern Tasmanian Schools Volleyball roster — an achievement that reflects their dedication, teamwork and skill.

We would like to wish our students heading off to Borneo on their World Challenge expedition a safe, rewarding and unforgettable experience. This is a wonderful opportunity for them to step out of their comfort zones, build resilience, work as a team and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures when they return!

This term, we were proud to launch our involvement in the Tasmanian Learning Commission, an exciting initiative that empowers students to investigate real challenges that matter to them and make meaningful recommendations to improve learning in our school and across the state. Our student commissioners have already begun working together to identify focus areas and develop their data literacy. We can’t wait to see their ideas take shape and the positive impact they will have on our school community.

Looking ahead, we encourage all families to take part in our upcoming Discussion of Learning on 30 July. This is a valuable opportunity to connect with your young person’s teachers, hear about how their learning is progressing and discuss ways you can continue to support them at home. Strong partnerships between school and families are vital for student success and we look forward to seeing you there.

Next term, we’re also excited to launch preparations for Tournament of Minds – a program that challenges students to work together to solve open-ended problems that demand creative and critical thinking. It’s a wonderful chance for students to extend themselves, develop teamwork skills and have a lot of fun along the way. There will be opportunities in the weeks ahead for students to get involved, so I encourage everyone to keep an eye out and give it a go!

Thank you once again for your ongoing support and for all you do to help our young people thrive. We wish all our students, staff and families a safe, restful break and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for Term 3.

Horizons Year 9 Overland Track Adventure

A wonderful journey along the Overland Track with eight amazing adventurers!! Stunning weather greeted us every day allowing us to see all the mountains we travelled amongst. Walking across head waters in the frost and around mountains under blue skies, we discovered snippets of Tasmanian history, botany and geology. We also discovered how to make custard, a popular dessert! We enjoyed evenings in the huts preparing food, sharing highlights of the day and getting to know each other. Growing through challenge we have learnt a little about ourselves, each other and the world we live in.

Horizons Year 9 Cradle Mountain Adventure

As part of Horizons Year 9 students engaged in an array of activities in the pristine environment of the World Heritage site of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Photographers explored the wonder of their surroundings with both trepidation and excitement. Bush walkers contemplated the beauty and looming presence of Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake. Students also participated in some smaller walks to the enchanted forest and the rainforest walk. Devils at Cradle was a highlight for all as well as the art gallery at the Cradle Mountain Hotel.

Year 10 Legal Studies

Year 10 Legal Studies class were fortunate to have Hobart Barrister and Solicitor Fabiano Cangelosi visit the class.  He gave a presentation on various aspects of working in the law, then fielded questions that had been prepared by the group.  The students engaged in interesting discussions and very much appreciated the time he took out of a very busy day to speak with them.  They gained some very valuable insights into a career in the law and we thank him very much for his time.

News From Music

It has been a busy Term 2 in the music department! In week 6 the Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Simon Reade, were successful in achieving 2nd Runner-Up at the annual Hobart Eisteddfod. The ensemble competed against Hutchins and Collegiate and were rewarded with a trophy and ice cream for their efforts.

In week 9, sixty of our students from various bands and the vocal ensemble joined forces with Hillcrest College from Queensland. This was a brilliant opportunity to witness another school rehearse for their upcoming performances while they tour Hobart. Students from both schools gained an insight into how each school rehearses and performs, while enjoying recess and lunch time to mingle.

On Monday, the Vocal Ensemble set off once again to the Festival of Voices, where they performed in a free pop-up event at St David’s Cathedral. This event was attended by friends, family and local passers-by who were lucky enough to see the vocal ensemble perform amongst two other touring schools from Victoria.

Finally, our Stage Band and Symphonic Band shared their hard work in the whole school assembly on Tuesday. Stage Band performed You Can’t Stop the Beat from the hit musical Hairspray, while the Symphonic Band performed King of Pop, a medley of songs from Michael Jackson that the band will go on to play at the Victorian School Music Festival as part of their Melbourne trip in Term 3.

We would like to give a huge thank you to all the staff, students and families who assist us in achieving these amazing in and out of school opportunities!
