Principal Report

At Hobart City High School, our commitment to the 4Bs – Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be a Learner continues to shape our school culture and guide student success. This past fortnight has been a fantastic demonstration of these values in action across a variety of activities.

This week, our students commenced NAPLAN testing, an important opportunity to demonstrate their learning progress. We encourage all students to approach the tests with a growth mindset, focusing on doing their best and seeing challenges as opportunities for learning.

Our students have been outstanding role models, volunteering their time to support local feeder primary schools’ athletics carnivals. Their enthusiasm, encouragement and leadership have made a positive impact. This kind of community engagement reflects our strong belief in fostering connections and supporting others.

Our prefects and house captains recently attended the GRIP Leadership Conference, where they gained insights into leadership, teamwork, and the importance of service. They returned with fresh ideas and renewed energy to strengthen student voice and enhance school spirit. We look forward to seeing their leadership skills in action as they continue to inspire their peers.

In preparation for their upcoming camp, some Year 9 students have been honing their outdoor skills, including pitching tents and cooking on Trangias. These hands-on sessions are equipping them with essential problem-solving and teamwork skills while fostering resilience and independence. We are excited for them to put their learning into practice in the great outdoors.

Outdoor Education students have been making the most of Tasmania’s stunning coastline, taking part in surfing lessons. This experience has been a fantastic opportunity for them to challenge themselves, develop water safety skills, and build confidence in the surf.

These experiences highlight the way our students embrace challenges, step up as leaders, and contribute to their community—all while embodying the 4Bs. We are proud of our students efforts and look forward to seeing them continue to thrive

Year 9 Horizon Trip to Kunanyi

All Year Nine students travelled to the summit of kunanyi. After exploring and enjoying a BBQ, they walked from The Springs to Junction Cabin down to Lenah Valley Road. An incredible way to begin an exciting year filled with discovering self and discovering others

Orienteering

Orenteering is a fun sport involving running, map reading and problem solving. We have a team of students representing our school every Wednesday afternoon. May, Lachie, Griffin, Pyper, Henry, Lucas, Atti, Owen, Josh, Heath and Oscar completed round 1 at Sandy Bay. Congratulations to May for taking out 1st place in the girl's short course and Pyper for finishing 3rd in the girl's medium course. Round two was held at Kangaroo Bay. May, Lachie, Pyper, Henry, Lucas, Atti, Owen, Josh and Oscar braved the hot and windy conditions! May took out 1st place in the girl's medium course and Pyper finished 3rd. Oscar came 3rd in the boy's short course and Henry finished 3rd in the boy's long course. Well, done everyone! We're at Kingston next week.

Year 9 Horizon - Career Class

Year 9 Horizons – Career classes had the opportunity to explore the world of digital careers at a special excursion hosted at Elizabeth College and organised by the Beacon Foundation. Students gained insights from industry professionals to develop a deeper understanding of the many pathways available in the forever developing digital world. A huge thank you to Ash from Beacon Foundation for providing an engaging and inspiring experience for our students. These opportunities help expose our students to future careers and spark new aspirations!

Year 9 Science

Mr. Bounds’ 9E and 9F Science classes have been investigating The Law of Conservation of Mass in Term 1.

We first looked at the effect of vinegar on eggs (with a segue-to-come later this term).

Recently, Young People experimented using different quantities of vinegar and ‘bicarb soda’, with some going ‘that little bit extra’ with multiple trials … that will be great for their upcoming Common Assessment Task on the same investigation.
