News From The Principal
As we reach the end of another productive and busy term, we would like to extend gratitude to our students, staff and families for the incredible dedication shown towards fostering academic excellence, social growth and emotional wellbeing. Our focus on supporting students in all areas of their development continues to be a cornerstone of our work at Hobart City High School, and this term has been a wonderful example of that commitment. Throughout the term, we have seen significant growth in our students' academic achievements, with a focus on learning and embracing challenge.
This term, we were thrilled to host the Interschool Chess Competition, where students showcased their analytical thinking and sportsmanship. The competition fostered both intellectual growth and community spirit, with many of our students performing exceptionally well in their matches. Congratulations to all participants for their dedication and strategic prowess finishing third overall.
Our creative problem-solvers excelled in this year’s Tournament of Minds (ToM), tackling complex challenges with collaboration, ingenuity and perseverance. It was inspiring to see our students thinking outside the box and working as cohesive teams. Their efforts were rewarded with excellent results, and we are immensely proud of the way they represented Hobart City High School. We entered five teams, in Arts, STEM, Language Literature and two Social Sciences teams. Our STEM and Senior Social Sciences teams were awarded Honours, and our Social Sciences and Language Literature team won 1st place and will be travelling to Sydney at the end of October to compete in the ToM International Final.
This term also saw our students take part in the Maths Relay, where their quick thinking and teamwork truly shone. Competing under pressure, our teams worked through challenging mathematical problems with great skill. The collaborative spirit and mathematical precision on display were remarkable, and we congratulate all involved.
As we conclude the term, we want to acknowledge the tremendous effort from every member of our school community in making this such a successful term. Your hard work, resilience, and enthusiasm continue to contribute to a positive, supportive and high-achieving environment at Hobart City High School.
We wish everyone a safe and restful break and we look forward to seeing you all next term for more exciting challenges and successes.

Term 3 Prefect Report
This term we have been hard at work organising events and supporting our peers in Year 10 and the younger grades. During Book Week, on August 20, we held a House Reading event where participants could go to the library on their campus and earn points for their house by reading. Students were encouraged to dress up like the characters in their favourite books and we saw some absolutely fantastic costumes! All in all, the House Reading event was extremely successful. Some of us also helped to encourage students participating in the House Chess tournament that happened at the Ogilvie Campus. The next big event that we helped to organise was Wear it Purple Day, where we encouraged students to wear the colour purple with their uniform in order to show their support for the LGBTIQ+ community. Thanks to Ms. Sutton and the catering classes, who made hundreds of cupcakes for us to give away to help raise awareness for the LGBTIQ+ community. On Friday, the September 20, we held our R U OK event to promote the power of connection and conversation and help to educate people on how to better support their friends. The day was a huge success, with our staff vs student futsal game ending in a 2-2 draw, and many conversations being had over the delicious cookies provided once again by our wonderful cooking and catering classes, with thanks going to Ms Rankin.
Lachlan Monk and Daniel Rayner, Communications Prefects.
Redevelopment works
Hobart City High School redevelopment works
As Term 3 draws to a close, the $21.5 million redevelopment of our school is also drawing nearer. It has taken longer than anticipated to refine the concept plan for the works, and finalise the interim arrangements to ensure continuity of teaching and learning during the construction process. You can view the finalised concept plan and digital renders showing what the completed works will look like at the Department’s website here – https://www.decyp.tas.gov.au/project/hobart-city-high-school/
The Department will release the tender for the building contractor in November this year, with the successful contractor appointed and construction works to commence in 2025.
Once completed, the works will deliver contemporary learning spaces at the New Town campus as well as improvements to the Ogilvie campus. This will be an exciting time for our school and your patience and understanding during the construction process will be appreciated as we work to deliver these improvements for our students and staff.
Tournaments Of Minds
Our school community worked together with the Tournament of Minds committee to bring this event to life on our Ogilvie Campus. Thank you so much to all who volunteered. Congratulations to all the teams that competed; you all worked tirelessly on your long-term challenges. As a school we have so much to celebrate. We were awarded the following: STEM team took out honours Senior SOCIAL SCIENCE team took out honours SOCIAL SCIENCE 2 team took out first place, LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE team took out first place. The two winning teams will be off to Sydney in October for the international finals. Congratulations and thank you to all involved.
STEM Lessons with Our Feeder School
This term HCHS have hosted students from four feeder Primary Schools to participate in STEM lessons. Every Thursday Ms Wild would turn up in the “Magic STEM School Bus” and bring them to her HCHS science lab to have some fun! Students worked on activities to explore chemistry, biology and physics. We watched silver grow under a microscope, observed the structure of plant cells, pondered ocean acidification and played with light boxes exploring reflection and refraction. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to experience high school in a fun, friendly way and meet some potential high school friends. We hope all the students had fun, enjoyed the bus ride and learnt some new things along the way!
Tamania Training Awards
We would like to congratulate Eve Charlesworth and Aleira Chalker who were nominated for School-based Apprentice of the Year in the recent Tasmanian Training Awards. A special congratulations to Aleira who won and will represent Tasmania in the Australian Training Awards in December.
Beacon Career Program
The Beacon Career Program celebrated the completion of the Beacon Career Program by our first group of students! Over the 8-week program, students learnt about their career clusters, explored pathways, developed important work readiness skills and built their confidence for the future. In their final session, they reflected on their achievements, shared their work experiences and spoke about the exciting opportunities ahead. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and growth, and it was an honour to present them with certificates of completion.
Big Picture Camp - Ross Beaufront Property
Hobart City High Big Picture students overnighted in Ross at the Beaufront property. They planted over 500 trees for wildlife habitat corridors. There was music, cake and fireside chats with burnt marshmallows. The students organised the whole trip including pre-cooking the food. Prior to the trip they went to Nipaluna Nursery in small groups for a taster in growing seedlings. Big Picture then presented at the Tasmanian Youth Climate conference and shared some of their story with Costa!
Mid-Autumn Festival
Hobart City High School International Students celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival by making and eating mooncakes together. Students enjoyed celebrating their culture and sharing it with a friend in a hands-on learning opportunity. We used special mooncake moulds to shape our cakes and filled them with traditional bean paste and black sesame fillings.
News From The Science Titration Team
We would like to congratulate our Titration Team who achieved a great result of 3rd in the High School Division of the State Titration Competition. The team consisted of Mark L, Abhi S and An L. The students put a lot of time into learning and practicing titrations and we are proud of their achievement. An L received an almost perfect result with Mark and Abhi also achieving good results. All three students should be commended for their participation and for giving up many recess and lunch breaks.
Chess Tournament
HCHS hosted the third Inter-School Secondary Chess Tournament. Congratulations to our school team on coming third out of eleven teams. HCHS has qualified to take five players to the State Chess Finals to be held at The Friends School on Monday 21 October.

Support Youth Mental Health on Headspace Day
Wednesday, 9 October 2024
Pause, Reflect, and Reconnect with What Works for You This Headspace Day!
Headspace, Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation, is dedicated to providing early intervention mental health services for individuals aged 12-25. This Headspace Day, we invite everyone to join us in supporting youth mental health by taking a moment to pause, reflect and reconnect with what works for you.
Being a young person is a time of exploring new interests, developing life skills and envisioning the future. However, this exciting journey can also be overwhelming and stressful. This year’s theme, Pause. Reflect. Reconnect., encourages young people to find moments of balance and joy amidst life’s challenges. Whether it’s spending quality time with family, engaging in a beloved hobby, or simply taking a well-deserved break, self-care is crucial.
Not sure where to start? Visit the HCHS support team for guidance and resources that can help you on your journey.
We urge you to visit the Headspace website for valuable information on how you can get involved, discover helpful tips and explore activities to support both your own wellbeing and that of others. Together, let’s make a positive impact on the mental health of our young people.
