Message From The Principals
Welcome back to Term 3 at Hobart City High School! We hope you had a restful and enjoyable break and are ready to dive into another exciting term full of learning, growth and achievement.
This term, our school wide positive behaviour focus is on respect. We believe that respect is the cornerstone of a positive school environment where everyone feels safe, valued and included. Respect for oneself, respect for others and respect for our school and community are essential for creating a harmonious and productive school. We encourage all students to demonstrate respect in their interactions and to embrace diversity.
We have several exciting events and activities planned for Term 3. Get ready to make a splash at our annual Swimming Carnival! This event is always a highlight of the school year, bringing together students from across year levels to compete, have fun and show their house spirit. Whether you’re a competitive swimmer or just looking to participate in the novelty events, there’s something for everyone. Start practicing your strokes and get ready for a day of excitement and house spirit.
We are thrilled to announce that Hobart City High School will be participating in the Tournament of Minds again this year. This competition challenges students to think creatively and work collaboratively to solve complex problems. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their critical thinking and teamwork skills. Preparations are underway, and we look forward to seeing our students excel in this challenge and demonstrate their creativity.
Our budding engineers and innovators will soon be gearing up for the Solar Car Challenge. This exciting event allows students to design, build, and race their own solar-powered cars. It’s a great chance to apply STEM concepts in a practical and fun way, promoting sustainability and innovation. We can’t wait to see the incredible designs and ingenuity our students will bring to the challenge.
To ensure success in these upcoming events and all learning opportunities, we encourage students to start preparing early and to take advantage of the resources and support available at school. Teachers and facilitators are here to help guide and inspire you, so don’t hesitate to seek their assistance.
We are pleased to invite all students and their families to our upcoming Course Selection Evening, Wednesday 14 August 5.00pm - 6.30pm on the Ogilvie campus. This important event is designed to guide students in making informed decisions about their academic paths and future careers. We believe that families play a crucial role as partners in learning, and your involvement is essential to your child's success. Together, we will explore course options, discuss educational goals and ensure that each student selects the courses that best align with their interests and aspirations. Join us for an evening of collaboration and support, as we work together to pave the way for a bright lives and positive futures. Your participation is key to fostering a strong and supportive learning community. We also extend an invitation to attend our upcoming Discussions of Learning on Wednesday 21 August. This is a great opportunity to connect with your young person’s teacher, discuss their progress and collaborate on strategies for continued academic and personal growth.
As we embark on this new term, let’s commit to fostering an environment of respect, responsibility, safety and learning. Together, we can make Term 3 a memorable and enriching experience supporting the academic, social and emotional growth for everyone at Hobart City High School.

News From School Association
A big goal of the School Association Committee is to work with our community to make Hobart City High School the school of choice for Hobart families.
In Term 3 we will start reaching out to our feeder primary school associations to arrange Q&A sessions with families who want to know more about Hobart City High School. This is a great opportunity for parents and carers to find out more about student life at Hobart City High School.
Does your young person have an idea for a project to make Hobart City High School a better place? Students have the opportunity to apply for funds from the School Association to help turn their idea into reality. Please encourage your young person to have a chat with their friends and talk to their grade coordinators about their idea. They will need to prepare a short proposal about their idea. A new submission deadline will be announced soon.

Chairperson of the Hobart City High School Association Committee
News From Our School Health Nurse
As we approach Dental Health Week from 5 August to 11 August, it's time to dive into the importance of taking care of our teeth and gums. This year, the focus is on gum health. Understanding why it matters can make a big difference in your oral hygiene routine.
Gum disease impacts a surprising number of Australians, 1 in 4 to be exact! What's concerning is that it often goes unnoticed until it becomes serious. Healthy gums are essential because they provide support to your teeth and keep them strong for the long run.
Tips for Healthy Gums
Thorough Brushing: When brushing your teeth, pay attention to your gum line. Brush gently in circular motions to remove plaque and debris from both your teeth and gums.
Mastering Flossing: Flossing is key to maintaining healthy gums. Use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between teeth where your toothbrush can't reach. This helps prevent plaque buildup and keeps your gums healthy.
Regular Check-Ups: Visiting your dentist regularly isn't just for kids! It's important for teens and young adults too. Dental check-ups can catch early signs of gum disease and other oral health issues before they become major problems.
Oral Health Services Tasmania offers FREE dental care for ALL children and teenagers (Child or parent must hold a valid Medicare card). Call 1300 011 013 to make an appointment for your young person taking advantage of this service can help you maintain good oral health throughout your teenage years.
During Dental Health Week and beyond, make a commitment to prioritise your dental health. A healthy smile not only looks great but also contributes to your overall well-being. If you have any questions about oral hygiene or want to learn more about keeping your gums healthy, chat to your School Health Nurse today.
Let's make this Dental Health Week a reminder to brush, floss, and smile with confidence. Your future self will thank you for taking care of your teeth and gums today!

Canteen Price Increase
Due to the ever-increasing cost of food items and supplies, unfortunately we will need to increase prices of some items in the canteen. We have done our best to keep these increases minimal and to as few items as possible. This will take effect as of Monday 5 August. You can view prices in the Qkr! app for those items that can be ordered.
School Locker Uniform Information
A reminder that School Locker is our supplier of school uniform. They have plenty of stock of all items and sizes at their Cambridge store. If you are unable to get to the store, they do offer postage to your home address with a delivery fee or to the school at no cost.
NAIDOC Assembly
On Wednesday the 24 July we had our NAIDOC assembly and celebrations. We were fortunate to have Djuker Hart as our guest speaker. He spoke about life experience and his contribution and work within his indigenous community. His message was powerful and resonated with many students and staff. Djuker captivated us with his didgeridoo playing and explained how stories can be told through playing the didgeridoo. At the commencement of the assembly students lined up for smashed potatoes with butter and native pepper-berry. We were fortunate to have our potatoes donated by Daly Potato Co. - Farm Fresh Convenience. Whilst the line was long for the smashed treats, it was certainly worth the wait. A showcase game of football was held at lunch providing the entertainment while students enjoyed their potatoes. A wonderful day of celebrations.
Year 10 Design and Construction
Year 10 Design and Construction students have been developing their carpentry skills, learning how to plaster and practicing new painting techniques through a variety of individual and group projects. So far, our talented students have crafted their own toolboxes and constructed sturdy picnic tables, which will soon be installed proudly around the school. We look forward to seeing what else they create in the coming months as they continue to explore pathways into the construction industry.
