Message From The Principals
The school year is well and truly in full swing with rich learning occurring and many wonderful curricula and co-curricula opportunities available for our students. A snapshot of these activities includes debating, rowing, volleyball and chess. We have all settled into our routines and are following our 4Bs (be safe, be respectful, be responsible, be a learner).
Congratulations to all our Year 7 and 9 students who have participated in NAPLAN over the past two weeks.
A large number of our Year 10 students have had the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership at our feeder primary school athletic carnivals over the past few weeks. We have received feedback of how helpful and attentive they have been from running with students, assisting with timing and novelty events and helping Health and Physical Education teachers pack up. We are incredibly proud of how our students consistently represent our school and demonstrate our values of responsibility and respect.
We am thrilled to share with you the celebration of an important occasion in our school's history—the inaugural whole-school assembly held on Harmony Day hosted by our Prefects. This marked a significant milestone as we gathered together as a whole school community to celebrate diversity, inclusivity, and the spirit of harmony that binds us together. This assembly served as a testament to our collective commitment to fostering a culture of respect, understanding and acceptance within our school.
The journey to this moment has been a collaborative effort, made possible by the dedication and enthusiasm of our students, teachers, and staff. From the planning and organisation to the enthusiastic participation of everyone involved, it is evident that the values of respect and responsibility resonate deeply within our school community.
During Harmony Day students had the opportunity to participate in a football game, pancake flipping, bracelet making and chalk drawings. Harmony Day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of embracing diversity and promoting inclusivity in everything we do. It is a day to reaffirm our commitment to building a school community where every individual feels valued, respected, and supported to be their authentic selves. Building a positive culture is an important school priority.
Our teachers are busy preparing students progress reports which will come home in week 10 this term. We continue to work collaboratively to ensure every young person is thriving academically, socially and emotionally.
The Hobart City High School Association is an important committee of parents and carers who have a voice and work together to benefit the school. On Tuesday 5 March our School Association held their Annual General Meeting, a huge thank you to everyone who was able to attend. We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to our outgoing chair Melinda Maddock. Meetings are held once a month and we discuss school policies, implement plans for the improvement of the school and provide advice and recommendations on matters relating to the school. Unfortunately to date we have been unable to fill the treasurer’s role so, we are looking for someone to take on the role of treasurer. Members are required to attend a minimum of four meetings per year and can hold positions for up to two years. We also have limited committee member vacancies available. Please phone the school for further information or simply turn up to the next general meeting which will be held on Tuesday 9 April at 5:30 pm at the Ogilvie Campus. You can also attend the meetings via Teams if you are not able to make it in person. We hope to see you at our next meeting.

School Association News
The School Association held its annual general meeting in early March. We celebrated and reflected on the work of the association over the last two years since its inception when Hobart City High School was established. Melinda Maddock, our departing chairperson, was instrumental in this work and we thank Melinda for her service to the school. I would also like to extend a warm thanks to Kathryn Deeley our departing deputy chair who served on both the New Town High and Hobart City High School Associations.
The School Association Committee is made up of parents and carers who want to create a connected school community where families are welcome and actively encouraged to participate and support our school and learners. You are welcome to come along and help build a stronger school community that empowers our young people to thrive.
Claire Bryan- Chair - Hobart City High School Association Committee
NEXT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION MEETING
Our upcoming School Association meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 9 April at 5:30 pm, to be held at the New Town Campus. As a parent or carer, you are very welcome to attend. The committee is searching for a community member willing to undertake the role of Treasurer. If interested, please don't hesitate to reach out to the committee at HCHS.Association@decyp.tas.gov.au
Laptops 2024
A few important notes regarding laptops.
HCHS is a 1:1 device school which means each student in Years 7, 8 and 9 are issued their own school device. We explicitly teach our students to use their devices safely, respectfully, responsibly, and for learning.
If you have not yet returned your child’s 1) ICT Agreement and 2) Laptop Agreement, please do so. Both agreements are required before your young persons laptop can be issued.
-It is helpful if your child establishes a good routine of charging their laptop at home overnight, ready for the next days learning.
-If your child loses their charger, a new charger can be purchased at the Ogilvie Campus office for $40.00.
-If your child has a damaged laptop sleeve or laptop case that they would like to replace, a new sleeve can be purchased at the Ogilvie Campus office for $14.85 or they may prefer to purchase their own privately. Please return the damaged case or sleeve to the office.

Dance Classes
Our Year 9 dancers recently learnt about who Drill are and why they are important in our dance community. The lovely Bec shared information about their new program called Safe Spaces. Bec asked the student’s to share their thoughts about what a safe space looks like to them and also what a safe person would look like.
From there we rolled around on the floor, we created new movement and then worked in groups to create our own interpretation of contemporary dance. The Year 9s worked with open minds and were very respectful to our visitor.

Beacon Career Program
On Thursday 7 March Beacon Career Program students visited two different industries. They started the day exploring the media and communications industry at Southern Cross Austereo before putting their hard hats on and visiting the new Brighton High School under construction by Fairbrother.
Student Leaders
Our student leaders have been building connections with our school community by supporting Lansdowne Crescent Primary, Lenah Valley Primary, Mount Stewart Primary, Bowen Road Primary and the Southern Primary School Sports Association (SPSSA) this term at their athletic carnivals. It was amazing to see the sportsmanship and participation on display. Well done to all involved.
Year 8 Visual Arts
Some fantastic oil pastel work from our Year 8 Visual Art with Ms Hawson.
Year 8 Fitness For Life
Earlier in the month Year 8 students have been learning about using their own body weight for correct technique, before adding free weights and weight bars to increase muscle strength.
