Staffing Update
This term we have seen some staffing changes and will be welcoming two very experienced Maths/Science teachers who have volunteered to join us from central office, Peter Wright and Belinda Brannan.
We’d also like to welcome Rosanne McDade and Mary Stewart to our Big Picture team. They are taking over Sarah Stockwin’s advisory who has moved to the New Town Campus to teach EHASS. Mary is with us until towards the end of the term, and then Alan Poole will return for the remainder of the year to assist in Big Picture.
We’d also like to welcome Ellen Spencer who has started as a support teacher at New Town Campus and will be working in the Learning Centre on Monday, Tuesday and Fridays and Lauren Charlesworth, AST of Flexible Learning.
Cross Country
On Wednesday 10 May, HCHS will be holding its annual Cross Country Carnival. This will be immediately followed by a Colour Run. Events will be held on both campuses, with students completing a course that they have been practicing as part of their HPE curriculum.
The Cross Country will be held at the following times:
Senior School Cross Country:
Students will sign up to be a participant. Students not participating will remain in regular classes.
- 11:00 am - Year 9 participants, New Town Campus cross country course
- 12:10 pm - Year 10 participants, New Town Campus cross country course
Middle School Cross Country:
All Year 7 and 8 students will participate as a running competitor, or recreational walker.
- 12:20 pm Year 7, Ogilvie Campus cross country course
- 12:25 pm Year 8, Ogilvie Campus cross country course
All students may wear House colours for the day (instead of school uniform) in support of their House.
Colour Run
The Colour Run will be held at 2:00 pm at our Ogilvie Campus.
Students will complete a lap of the cross country course and pass through a number of colour stations. At each station, Colour Runners are doused from head to toe in a different coloured powder. Participants wear white at the starting line and finish the race plastered in colour.
Students wearing uniform will not be permitted to take part in the colour run. Changing facilities are limited - participants are advised to bring a white t-shirt that they can put over the top of their house colours for the colour run, and to quickly change out of afterwards. Students are also encouraged to bring a towel.
All Middle School students will have the opportunity to participate in the Colour Run. There will be bypass lanes for students not wishing to be covered in colour powder to still take part.
Senior School students will need to sign up for both Cross Country and Colour Run by TODAY. They will meet at New Town Campus before walking to the Ogilvie Campus with supervising staff. Students will return to New Town Campus in time for buses and transport home at the end of the day.
New Chapter For HCHS
From next Monday I am very pleased to inform you that HCHS will have a new Lead Principal- Britany Roestenburg. I am taking leave to visit with family and have decided to retire at the end of my leave. This decision did not come easy as I have been very committed to ensuring that HCHS is successful in these early establishing years to become the School of Choice for our Hobart families. However, Britany is currently our Improvement Consultant and has worked side by side with me since the start of last year and hence has a very sound understanding of our context and where we are heading. She also comes to the position with a wealth of experience in several states and is very excited to be able to work with the entire school community on the next chapter of HCHS.
I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my time at Hobart City High and am proud of what we have been able to achieve in such a short time. I have complete faith that the momentum of improvement will continue to grow under the leadership of Britany, Andrew and Holly and look forward to celebrating the school’s future successes over coming years. Best wishes - Deb Day

From your School Association
An important role for the School Association is to provide input into the school’s policies and plans. At our last meeting we talked about the school’s policy on mobile phones and the Daily Bulletin notifications, and were pleased to support those approaches as well as the draft school vision statement. As part of this role members of our committee also participate in groups such as the capital works project working group and the Wall of Achievement selection panel.
Friends of Hobart City High School
We are very excited to have established a formal Partnership Agreement with the New Town High School and Tech Old Boys Association to support the new ‘Friends of Hobart City High School’. Our combined objective is to assist in developing a broader base of the school community by engaging former students of New Town High School and Ogilvie High School in school activities. We will work together on our immediate priorities of setting up a database of old scholars and bringing the Ogilvie Old Girls into the Partnership. We also plan to create opportunities for mentoring and fundraising. If you are an old scholar and/or would like to be involved in Friends of Hobart City High please get in touch at hchs.association@decyp.tas.gov.au.
Next meeting
Our next meeting is Tuesday 9 May, 5:30–7:00pm at the Ogilvie Campus. You are welcome to come along or join us online via Teams – email hchs.association@decyp.tas.gov.au to get the link.

Every School Day Matters
Start Term 2 right by making every school day count!
Going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn and grow, and connect with their mates and teachers. It’s where bright futures start and where they’ll benefit the most.
When your child goes to school every day, it helps them to:
- learn better
- find interests
- make friends
- connect with teachers
- be happier
- have a brighter future
We have lots in store for this term, including the Cross Country, Colour Run, EC Taster Day, Year 10 Meaningful Pathways Event, Year 9 Life Choices Program and Transition Days.
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.
To find out more, visit the Anything can happen website.
Student Validation Forms
The office will be making contact with parents who have not returned their student validation forms during the next few weeks. It is very important to return this information to the school each year as we update our permissions about local excursions, photos, emergency contacts etc.
We are aiming to have all validation forms returned by the end of this month and seek your assistance to meet this deadline.
Hard copies of forms have been sent home to students and we will follow up with SMS text reminders and phone calls.

Big Picture Students Complete Internship In Remote Western Australian School
Our names are Charlotte and Madi and we are in Year 11 and 12 at Hobart Big Picture. Both of us want to go to University after completing Year 12 and study for a teaching degree. We have both had multiple internships in local schools doing some of our own teaching and senior thesis research. For example, Madi has been examining the classroom environment and how it affects students’ ability to learn, and I have been investigating the differences between urban and remote schooling. As part of our learning in Big Picture we were given the amazing opportunity to have an internship interstate in Western Australia.
On Tuesday 14 March we flew, by ourselves, to a remote town called Karratha which was a half an hour drive from our destination, Roebourne. It was a 15-hour travel day and we had to catch three planes. We flew Hobart to Melbourne, Melbourne to Perth and Perth to Karratha. We attended our internship at Roebourne District High School for 18 days and stayed with the Principal of the school and her family. The population of RDHS is 100% aboriginal students. It is also very hot. When we were there, it got to 45 degrees!
I was working with the HPE teacher as that is what I want to specialise in. I got to teach some of my own lessons while Madi was in the Year 1/2/3 class, and she got to rearrange their classroom to see what impact this had on the students’ learning.
We learnt about aboriginal language and culture, traditional landmarks and the history of the surrounding towns, significant differences in lifestyle and school being so remote and rural. We learnt how to ask respectful questions, and understand the behaviour of students and lots more in regard to our project work as well.
This was such a beneficial learning opportunity for us that we are very grateful for.
All of this work has contributed to our senior thesis projects which is a part of the International Big Picture Learning Credential and will be our entry pathway into university.

Upcoming Event - Tasmanian Youth Forum
On June 2, 2023 a group of Year 10, 11 and 12 Big Picture students are travelling to Launceston to attend an annual Youth Forum. The Tasmanian Youth Forum (TYF) brings together young people aged 12-25 from around the state to discuss issues that are important to them, and the solutions that will improve outcomes for young Tasmanians. It is a long day, departing at 7:00 am and not getting back until 5:30 pm but well worth the trip as it facilitates youth voice.
Our young people consistently report mental health as one of their leading concerns. Many young Tasmanians feel that they haven't gained the knowledge and skills to maintain their own mental wellbeing, or to support their friends to do so. TYF 2023 will explore mental wellbeing and resilience – what young people have, what they need and what this looks like.
We look forward to reporting back after the forum.

Music Notes
We have had a fantastic start to the 2023 school year. All Year 7 students have their own 1 to 1 instrument for the whole year. We offer a wide range of group tuition on many instruments including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba and strings. This is initially a practical year long program that provides pathways into Year 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 music courses.
In August, approximately 50 students from our Middle School Concert Band will be travelling to Melbourne to participate in the Victorian Schools Concert Band Competition. This is the very first Hobart City High School mainland tour and an exiting opportunity for our students to enjoy post COVID school organised tours. We are very much looking forward to the trip.
Each year, we have many new Year 7 students that have previously played an instrument in the combined primary school instrumental program choose to attend Hobart City High School. Mr Brown and Mr McGee conduct the Hobart City High School Middle School Concert Band. Year 7 students who were previously involved in the primary schools instrumental program are invited to attend Monday after school rehearsals. Other Year 7 students who have private instrument tuition are welcome to attend the after school rehearsals. All Year 7 and 8 students are encouraged to attend Monday after school rehearsals as they become more proficient on their instrument. We rehearse from 3:15 to 4:30pm in the Ogilvie Campus music room. It is important that these students continue to play their instrument in our Middle School Concert Band and parent support is appreciated.
Our co curricular program of ensembles are rehearsing and new students are welcome to attend.

In previous years we have had a large number of students attending all groups and as students improve on their instrument, they are welcome to be part of these programs when they feel that they are confident with reading music and playing their instrument.
Ms Fletcher and Ms Stowe are very experienced music teachers and teach students to learn how to play their instrument and improve music literacy skills in reading and writing music. They have a strong focus on curriculum development, teaching the skills and knowledge of reading writing and playing music. As part of the learning scope and sequence, all years and classes are continuously taught how to read, write and count music. Instruments are available for long term individual borrowing and homework practice is an expected part of our curriculum.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
Thank You - The Salvation Army
Late in Term 1 HCHS received a generous donation of an abundance of Easter eggs. A huge acknowledgement and thanks goes out to The Salvation Army for supporting our school community on an ongoing basis!
