Message From the Principals
Welcome to our final newsletter for 2022.
We will keep this as a brief update but wanted to thank you for working with us in our first year as Hobart City High School.
We had a hugely successful Awards Evening last week where we celebrated the wonderful achievements of our 2022 inaugural cohort and our new school. It was an amazing event and credit to all those involved and especially the award winners. Thank you to all the families who came to support this special evening.
We wish you all the best over the Christmas break with your families and look forward to working with you again in 2023.
Uniforms
We are working closely with School Locker to ensure that our wonderful new uniforms are ready for the commencement of 2023. Don’t forget to utilise the online ordering system and you can try on uniforms for sizing at School Locker at any time.
Our 2023 Uniform and Sun Safe Policy can be found on our website HCHS Uniform Policy Sun Smart Policy and Dress Code
The important point to note
- Students in years 9-12 can wear either the old Ogilvie or New Town uniforms OR the new HCHS uniform but students are not permitted to mix and match.
Update – Hobart City High School - Elizabeth College Model:
We would like to provide everyone with an update in relation to the continued development of the model for Hobart City High School and Elizabeth College.
To provide our community with the best information, consideration is currently being given to bringing forward the planned review of the model, which was proposed to occur in 2024.
The HCHS School Association and Elizabeth College School Association will be working together to develop a shared position around a schedule for the review to allow the best outcomes for our learners.
The two School Associations are working together on this and have planned to meet in February 2023 to begin this important work.
We will continue to keep you updated as this work progresses.
If you would like to be involved, please reach out to the School Associations to find out how you can be a part of this process.
Our HCHS School Association Chair is Mel Maddock and she can be contacted at hchs.association@education.tas.gov.au
2023 Maths Update
At Hobart City High School we are planning to use Math Space for Math instead of Math Pathways. At school this will act as a teaching resource, a math textbook and give opportunities for diagnostic testing and adaptive tasks to be set for students to support student learning. Math Space will allow students to access math learning through further questions and access to the textbook while still being supported through ‘hints’, videos, and step by step support if they need it from home as well. We are looking forward to enhancing math learning at Hobart City High School in 2023 and this is one part of how we will be doing that. We will send information out early next year for an optional online Math Space parent event hosted by Math Space.

Collaborating with Elizabeth College (EC)
Elizabeth College Principal Shane Fuller and members of the EC School Association were our special guests at the December School Association meeting. We talked about the review of the model for Hobart City High School and Elizabeth College, and how the associations can work together on the approach to community consultation. We’ll be meeting again in February to work this out in more detail.
Annual General Meeting 2023
The School Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Tuesday 7 March 2023, 5:30 pm in the Ogilvie Campus Boardroom. We’ll be voting in Committee members at this meeting, and I really encourage you to get involved. As a member of the Committee you have a voice in the decisions of the school. You also get to share ideas with passionate parents and carers, teachers and principals about how we can best support our young people to flourish.
If you have any questions about the Committee we’re happy to answer them, just email hchs.association@education.tas.gov.au .
Looking forward
Next year will be an exciting one as we complete the merger and take a big step in the journey of HCHS. We’ll kick off with the Welcome Families Picnic on Wednesday 1 March, and there will be other opportunities for families to participate in the life of the school as the year goes on.
I would like to thank our dedicated Committee members, principals, teachers, staff and family members who have come along to our meetings and have given their time to supporting the work of the Association. I wish everyone a restful and fun summer holiday break. See you next year!

Congratulations An!
An, (8B), was successful recently in being awarded a Harding Miller Education Foundation Platinum Scholarship for 2023-2024. This scholarship will enable An to access extension and enrichment opportunities as well as provide her with new tools for learning (including a laptop and financial support with course and school fees).
Over 700 applications were received and we are very proud of An for being selected as one of the Australian recipients this year.
Congratulations, An. We wish you all the very best with your future learning.
Erika Boas, Assistant Principal - Teaching and Learning and Year 10 Support - Ogilvie Campus
Year 10 Psychology
In our last lesson of the year, Year 10 students played board games and card games that they had created. Each of the games tested their understanding of the topics covered this semester. A fun way to end our year!
International Students at Bonorong
Tuesday 6 December was a special and an educational day for us. We went to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary with other international students and three lovely teachers that accompanied us. They gave us a worksheet to do while roaming around. We met native animals like the Tasmanian Devil and kangaroos. The kangaroos were very friendly and were enjoying the food we fed them. We took lots of photos together and had ice cream which the teachers had bought us. It was a great experience for all of us and we look forward to our next excursion.
Salvation Army - Christmas Warehouse
Through our school Chaplain, Hobart City High School students have had the opportunity to contribute to the wonderful work of the Salvation Army by helping to sort presents as part of the Christmas Appeal- Giving Tree & Toy Run Initiatives.
As part of the excursion a small group of Year 9 students accompanied our Chaplain, Bridget Tape to The Salvation Army Christmas Warehouse in Derwent Park.
Essentially, what that involved was a few hours each Tuesday students were either sorting gifts and/or food so that they were ready for distribution. Toys had to be sorted into their appropriate age and food donations were sorted into categories of food.
It was astounding sighting the generosity of the ‘givers’ in Hobart. Especially The Toy Run which brought in an abundance of toys! As you can imagine, sorting through each toy takes a lot of effort, so The Salvos rely heavily on volunteers to help make it happen.
Those volunteers will be adding value to their life skills (and resumes) and can continue to develop an appreciation for agencies and work-life beyond of the classroom.
Well Done Girls! Or should we say Christmas Elves!!
Bridget Tape - School Chaplain
School Musical 'The Pitch'
The school musical 'The Pitch' was a huge success! Congratulations once again to all of our talented Drama, Dance, Music and Visual Arts students and teachers for putting on such a wonderful show.
Metro Bus Service Changes in 2023
To respond to the transport needs for students attending Hobart City High School, routes 203 and 212 have been reviewed and updated to better service students residing in West Hobart, Lenah Valley, and Mount Stuart. These changes will apply from the start of the 2023 school year. These changes will directly benefit students travelling to and from Hobart City High School from the West Hobart/Mt Stuart/Lenah Valley areas.
Route 203 – Changes summary
To cover a wider area of West Hobart, Mt Stuart and parts of Lenah Valley and to improve on-time
performance, the service will no longer travel via Liverpool St but will instead travel via Davey St
and Harrington St. The service will continue to West Hobart and deviate into Mt Stuart before
travelling to Hobart City High School via Augusta Rd and Giblin St. As this journey will be longer, the arrival time at Hobart City High will change to 8:43am. The service will still depart the Hobart CBD at 8:06am.
Route 212 – Changes summary
Route 212 will now depart Hobart City High School at 3:14pm and be extended to include part of
Lenah Valley. This earlier departure time will attract more students to use the service. On arrival at
Salier Crescent, Route 212 will continue to the city via Mount Stuart and West Hobart as Route 540.
We are still in the process of finalising the final route design of Route 212 through Lenah Valley.
Monitoring of Route 203/212 during Term 1 2023
We will be monitoring these two route changes during Term 1 in 2023. There may be a need to
make slight adjustments to certain sections of the route or the timetable to ensure services run on
time.
There are no other changes planned to other Hobart City High School services.
Outdoor Education Camp
Ogilvie Campus Outdoor Education students had an awesome three-day camp on Maria Island. We were so proud of the resilience and encouragement the team showed on their challenging 20km bike ride and hike up Bishop and Clerk. Self-sufficiency was on display by students being responsible for their own tents and food. Plus, how could you not enjoy a camp with wombats everywhere.
Orientation Day - Year 7 2023 Students
We recently held a highly successful Orientation Day for our incoming 2023 Year 7 students. We look forward to learning together with our new Hobart City High School Middle School students in 2023.
